Trying to Out-Knit the Yarn

I’m currently knitting my third pair of socks for the year. I set my goal low this year even though I love knitting socks. But, pain in my hands limits my knitting nowadays, and goodness knows I want to manage that so I can keep knitting for years. I’ve run into a little bit of a problem with this pair of socks though; I’m running out of yarn before I run out of sock.

Pair of light blue handknit socks with cables, one of which is unfinished and still on the needles. A ghost decoration sits nearby.
Is there enough yarn?

I’ve got about maybe 40 rows left to go to finish these socks, but I definitely don’t have 40 rows of yarn left. I knew I didn’t have enough yarn before I even cast on the second sock, but I did it anyway. There is no matching yarn hiding in my stash and I have no plan for how I’m going to finish the toe, but I knit on anyway. (And the yarn is a discontinued yarn I bought a decade ago, which I have no desire to hunt down more of or buy even if I found more.)

I feel like there is some sort of lesson for life here. I know that I’ve got some of the same type of yarn in my stash that I can use to finish the toe, even if it means the socks won’t match. Could that be a commentary on how life doesn’t always end up the way you think it will but it will turn out okay anyway? Or maybe it is a cautionary tale about ploughing forward when you know things aren’t going to work out the way you planned.

Or, you know, maybe I’m reading too much into a pair of socks.
