I love to plan. I don’t always follow through on those plans, but I still love making them. While planning for the Smalls SAL, I made a list of all the designs I would like to stitch. And, to make it easy on myself, I gathered together all of the supplies I will need to stitch them.
That’s all the floss, patterns, and fabric for all the designs I will stitch for the Smalls SAL this year. You may remember that I did the same thing last year. Having everything all in one place meant that when the beginning of the month rolled around, I didn’t need to toss my stash looking for floss and fabric, possibly delaying my stitching for a week or so before I could get all the supplies. (And, since I am taking part in Stitch from Stash this year, this early organization had the added benefit of ensuring I don’t need to dip into my 2014 budget.)
How have you prepared for the Smalls SAL? Will you be stitching whatever strikes your fancy, or do you have a list of designs ready? Have you got your supplies, or will you be getting them as you need them? Do you have any other hints for fellow stitchers?
Oh, and speaking of lists, here is what I plan to stitch (in no particular order):
- Cutwork Compass Rose
- Delightful Dragon Scissor Fob
- Holiday Jar Lids
- Child’s Heart
- Fire Dragon
- Weather Vane
- Dragon Rampart
- Jeanne Love’s Angel
- Geometric Pincushion
- Tulip Basket
- Along Life’s Way
- Happy Holidays!

What a fabulous idea to choose your patterns, and to prepare in advance. I am well know for pulling apart boxes, bins, and cupboards in search of materials, books, etc. very dissatisfying when you “know it was just her the other day” LOL I have two already chosen and I picked up the floss I was missing for them yesterday. My one for January is almost finished…yay me! I’ll have to seek out 10 more designs…then post about it. What a fun SAL thank you!
Looking forward to seeing your progress. I loved Cutwork Compass Rose. Fun to do and a beautiful finish.
I really should do this since I already decided what I’m going to stitch. Thank you for posting this. That is a wonderful list of smalls you have there..I can’t wait to see your progress.

I haven’t picked my patterns in advance, but I do have a “smalls box” where I keep most of my smalls patterns. When I finish one, The Hubs picks a number between 1 and 40 (I don’t have that many in there just like the idea of really getting a random one) and I pull it out and stitch (I kitted most of them up years ago). I do like your idea of having specific ones to stitch though – may have to double think my process…
Love to see them stitches. I also mayed most of the choices.
I’m planning on using up my scraps of fabric and leftover floss. In the interest of not accumulating more smalls that I never finish-finish I’m planning on only biscornus, because I can finish those immediately and not fuss about with cardboard/cord/other pretty but finicky things. I haven’t narrowed down the patterns but I’ll probably do the first one that fits on the fabric 😉
I’m afraid up to now all I have done is *think* about what I will do rather than *do* it!
After the Crazy January Challenge then I will get myself organised!
I’m fairly prepared, but as it turns out, not as prepared as I thought I was. Finished one SAL piece and was going to start the next when I discovered I didn’t have the right count fabric for that design. So I picked up another from my planned list… and discovered I was missing three of the threads… doh! Oh well, getting the DMC will be a lot easier than getting the specialty fabric I need XD
p.s. I see what you’re doing there Ms. Teresa Wentzler fan 🙂
I’d kill to be able to stitch Cutwork Compass Rose!
Excellent planning!
Last year I put all the threads for Dragon Dreams onto a separate ring and kept the charts and fabric in one folder so I could easily find them each month.
Interesting list of smalls for this year, looking forward to seeing them stitched.
