Snowball Fight!

This past weekend we had our first snowstorm of the year. Usually, we don’t get large amounts of snow until after Christmas, so getting between 10 and 20 cm (4 to 8″) this early in the season is a sign that this winter might be bad.

In a lovely little bit of synchronicity, Jennifer Aikman-Smith of Dragon Dreams released the first part of her holiday treat on Friday, just before the snow began. The subject of this year’s treat: a snowball fight!

I’m stitching mine on a Silkweaver Solo that I purchased years ago, back before they were taken over by Needleworker’s Delight. The colours and fibres are as per the chart.

If you’d like to stitch this too, head over the Dragon Dream’s Facebook page. The second part comes out tomorrow (December 17th), and the final part will be out on December 21st.

Christmas Treasures

Sometimes you’ve just got to call something done, even if it isn’t totally done.

Christmas Treasures, designed by Victoria Sampler

I’ve been working on Victoria Sampler’s Christmas Treasures since 2008. But, to be honest, I fell out of love with it pretty quickly. I had purchased the lovely box that was on the cover of the chart, so I felt like I had to finish it. But I didn’t…

Christmas Treasures’ Santa

I dug out the project the other day and took it to a stitching night. There, with the encouragement of some of the ladies present, I decided to finish up a couple of motifs, and then call it done. I’ll be finishing it into a small pillow (eventually), and I’ll be using the lovely box for Jeanette Douglas’ Strawberry Stitches instead.

I think sometimes you need to just call something done and move on, rather than let it hang around in your workbasket (and mind) for years and years.

Temperature Scarf Continued

It has been a while since I’ve shared my Temperature Scarf. And, believe it or not, I haven’t given up on it!

Temperature Scarf through December 11, 2013

Temperature Scarf through December 11, 2013

Here it is! It is complete through to December 11th, with all the loose ends woven in. So far I’ve used about 400 yards of yarn, with a couple more weeks of knitting to go. (I haven’t weighed all the yarn yet, though.)

You will have to excuse the poor quality of the pictures. We’ve had very cloudy skies for the past week or so, and taking pictures is difficult. (I’m going to get a lightbox of some sort working after Christmas.)

Bad pictures aside, I am really pleased. And, honestly, I’m a bit surprised I’ve managed to stick with the project for the entire year. I did pit it aside for a couple of months, but it is all caught up now and I’m eager to finish it. In the end, I’m going to have one funky, really long, super warm, totally original scarf.

TUSAL – December 2013

Well, I’m more than just a little late with this month’s TUSAL. Somehow, I forgot to add the reminder to my calendar. Couple that with a cold that just won’t go away, and (as usual) I’m late with my post.

TUSAL - December 2013

TUSAL – December 2013

My little container is very full this month. I’ve been working hard on Christmas gifts, my Torah verses, and something for me once in a while.

TUSAL Jar

TUSAL Jar

And here is my jar for the year. It isn’t as full as last year’s, but I think it looks great. I got a lot done (and made too many new starts!).

If you’d like to know more about the Totally Usless Stitch Along (TUSAL), you can check out Sharon’s blog at It’s Daffycat. She has said that she will be posting the information about the 2014 edition soon. I’ve been taking part since the beginning (2009?), when it was hosted by Yoyo (who is greatly missed), and I plan to take part again in 2014!

SmallsSAL2014And, if you are looking for another SAL to take part in during 2014, may I suggest my Smalls SAL? You can check out all the info here.

Stitchers’ Questions – Part Two

Here are some more of those stitchers’ questions that I found over on Bonnie’s blog.

11) Who is your favourite designer?
Teresa Wentzler. But I also love Jennifer Aikman-Smith of Dragon Dreams and Passione Ricamo.

12) Least Favourite Designer
Well… let’s just say I don’t like primitive designs or reproduction samplers.

13) Will you/would you support a designer whose personal beliefs offended/angered you?
Hmmm…. there are a couple of designs whose designs I don’t buy because of some of the things they’ve said. But, honestly, I couldn’t care less about a person’s religion, lifestyle, etc. It is only when a person goes out of their way to be offensive that I get riled up.

14) Do you have a lamp especially made for needleworkers/crafters?
Yep.

15) What brand of stitching lamp do you have/prefer?
I have a Daylight Lamp and I love it. I also have a rechargeable Ott light for taking to classes.

16) What kind of environment best suits you when you are stitching?
I like it to be quite and comfortable when I stitch. My preferred spot is on the sofa, listening to a podcast.

17) Have you stitched any design more than once?
I’ve stitched L&L’s The Wedding Twice, and one of the Mirabila baby designs (maybe the moon one) three times.

The Wedding, Lavender and Lace

18) Favourite design you have stitched and finished?
My favourite is Teresa Wentzler’s The Castle, which hangs in our hall, and Mirabila’s Garden Verses, which hangs beside my writing desk.

19) Least favourite design you’ve stitched and finished?
A spitfire that I stitched for my jerk of a high-school boyfriend. I got it back and it now hangs in my dad’s bedroom. It really is a great design, but the memories suck.

20) Last, but not least, what’s your longest running WIP?
I think it is Magical Night. It is going on 16 years, I believe.

That was fun! I hope that you answer these questions too, if you haven’t already. Be sure to leave a link so I can read your answers.

Stitchers Questions – Part One

I found these great stitching questions over at Bonnie’s blog, and I thought it would be fun to answer them.

1) Which fabric do you most prefer?
I really love Belfast, but I usually buy Lugana.

2) What is your favorite fabric count?
32 count is my go-to. But, if something has a lot of beads, I often use 28 since the beads sit nicer.

3) What colour fabric do you most enjoy stitching on?
It depends on the design. White is nearly always good. Confederate grey is probably my favourite colour. I also really like most of the colours from Enchanting Lair since her hand-dyeds are crazy. I really, really don’t like crazy hand-dyed fabric. I think most of it is too loud, and makes the design look dated.

4) What is your favorite fibre?
I like plain ole’ DMC. I also enjoy stitching with Dinky Dyes and Gloriana.

5) How many of the 450 DMC Colours do you own?
You mean 472, included the variegated? I have all of them, including the newly released colours.

6) Of your last 5 projects — how many used DMC/Anchor as the main floss?
The last five projects I’ve picked up include: two Christmas gifts (DMC for both of them), my Torah piece (DMC), Into the Deep from PR (DMC) and Ink Circle’s Namaste (DMC).

7) Of the last 5 projects, if you didn’t use DMC/ANCHOR — what did you use?
I wish I could remember all the projects I worked on. I know that the Victoria Sampler 12 Days of Christmas bellpull uses a bunch of different silks, and I used some Watercolours for the Dragon Dreams coin purse. Other than that, I don’t remember.

8) What needles do you prefer?
Bohin 28

9) What is the UGLIEST design you’ve encountered?
Oh… Well, I won’t name names, but I really think the super primitive designs are not great at all. Especially when they sell for $8 and you could easily stitch them from the picture.

10) What is the most BEAUTIFUL design you’ve encountered?
Oh, goodness. There are many beautiful designs. But, if I had to pick one, it would be Teresa Wentzler’s Rapunzel.

I’ll post the rest of the questions tomorrow. If you decide to answer the questions too (or if you already have), leave a comment so I can check them out!

2014 Smalls SAL

Smalls: pin cushions, needlebooks, book marks, biscornus, ornaments, etc. I think there isn’t a stitch around that doesn’t, at least occasionally, enjoy stitching smalls. In 2014, I’ll be hosting  the Smalls SAL, and I hope you will join me!

SmallsSAL2014

Rules

Just like the Ornament SAL, the rules are simple.

  1. Stitch a small every month. You get to decide what a small is for you. 50×50 stitches? 100×100 stitches? It’s up to you. You just need to be able to get it done by the check-in day. (WIPs that you complete in time for the check-in are great too!)
  2. Post a picture of your completed small (stitching done, but the actual finishing is optional) on the last Wednesday of every month.
  3. Hop over here to my blog and add a comment to the current month’s check in post to get an entry into the end of the year draw.

Also, please consider using the above graphic to link back to this page so other people can find out about the SAL and join in the fun.

Dates

The dates for check in are as follows:

  • January 29
  • February 26
  • March 26
  • April 30
  • May 28
  • June 25
  • July 30
  • August 27
  • September 24
  • October 29
  • November 28
  • December 31

Prizes

There will be a draw held on January 7th, 2015 for all the participants in the SAL. To enter, just leave a comment on the check in posts with a link to your ornament of the month. For every month you post your pictures and leave a comment you will get an entry into the draw. And I would love it if you would link back to the Smalls SAL page. (It’s permanent home is at this location.)

What will the prize be? A surprise, of course! But it will be stitching relate! If you’d like to donate something towards the prize please send me an email. (And thank you very much!)

Need a Reminder?

Want to make sure you never forget a check in post? Sign up for my mailing list, and I will send out an email every month after I post up the check in post. Don’t worry, I will never sell, share, trade or otherwise abuse your email address. Heck, I’ll be doing the mailing list manually!

If you signed up for reminders for the Ornament SAL for this year, you will need to sign up for reminders again. As I promised, I will be deleting all emails from the 2013 list as soon as I draw for the prize.

Participants

Interested in joining up? Just add you link to the list below. If you can’t get the form to work, please send me an email and I will add you manually.
