TUSAL – November

Happy new moon!  Yes, I am on time this month.  Here is my TUSAL picture for November:

As you can see, I’ve knit something with pink yarn, added buttons to something, knit something with purplish-blue yarn, and did a whole pile of cross stitching.  (You can also see a wee bit of my computer desk in the bottom picture.  Any guess as to what that is behind and above the jar to the centre left?  It is cross stitch!)

Last night I also finally added the beaded danglers and loop to Dragon Dream’s Perforated Paper Castle Ornament.  I understand that it will be avaliable from Patterns Online on December 1st for those of you who didn’t make it to the Creativ Festival.  It is a lovely design that is fun to stitch and a cinch to put together.

I also thought I would share why I now work from working copies of everything.  This is the back of You Were Hatched.  Notice the missing pieces.  (Don’t worry, Missy Ann, your chart is safely stored away.  Baby Man hasn’t been anywhere near it.)

Dragons for Me

The other day I thanked Missy Ann for something that I didn’t go into detail about.  Well, it has arrived, and I’ve done some work, and now I can show you:

You Were Hatched by Teresa Wentzler

You Were Hatched by Teresa Wentzler

Missy Ann has been kind enough to lend me the chart I most wanted to stitch, Teresa Wentzler’s You Were Hatched.  Thank you again, Missy Ann!

As you may remember, I have You Were Hatched, stitched by Zeb, as a needlebook from the Fantasy Exchange.  I had wanted it very much before I got the exchange, but once I had it in person, that really solidified my desire to have a version I could hang in Baby Man’s room. And thanks to Missy Ann, I will be able to do that shortly.

I’d also like to thank all the generous ladies who have either traded, sold to me very inexpensively, or offered to send me for free several of the Teresa Wentzler charts I have been looking for.  Well it is true that only the TW Designworks patterns are going out of print (Leisure Arts owns the rights to the others and can do with them as they please, and several are already out of print), I’m happy to be able to get my hands on whatever I can.  The only one I’m looking for now that is discontinued and is not avaliable from POL is Peacock Tapestry.  Wish me luck!

In other cross stitch news, Erica was kind enough to take me to stitching night at Gitta’s yesterday, and I had a great time. (Thank you again, Erica.  And sorry again about getting you to turn the wrong way!)  It is so nice to spend time with people who share your passion.  I’, hoping that we will be able to do it again soon.  It was also great to spend more than five minutes in Gitta’s.  Next time I need to bring a longer shopping list! I just picked up some DMC to do the back of Sparkling Hearts in DMC (thanks to Mill Hill’s conversion chart), and a Mill Hill ornament kit (which is one of my big weaknesses).

And in knitting news, I’ve almost finished that Christmas gift I’ve been working on for months.  It isn’t that big or complicated, it’s just that I haven’t been inspired.  But, with some hard work, it will be done today, and I can wash and block it and get it ready to wrap.  And then I can start on more gifts.  Once my holiday knitting/crocheting/stitching is done, I’m going to knit this for me: Lily Cardigan.  I had the yarn for it since about this time last year, so it is about time I get to it!

A Shawlette For Me

Last week was about cross stitching, and so far this week seems to be all about knitting.  Yesterday I finished off my Skinny Ruffles Shawlette, using Dye-Versions Au Lait.  It hasn’t been blocked yet, but I still love it!

Skinny Ruffles Shawlette

Skinny Ruffles Shawlette

The shawlette, before blocking, measures about 96cm for the wingspan and 42cm at the widest point.

The pattern is very straightforward.  If you can do a knit stitch, yarn over (yarn forward), knit two together, and slip a stitch, then you can make this shawlette.  The only difficult bit is the increases down the centre, which are made using the backwards loop method (aka Make 1 Away).  I think mine turned out too loose, but I do sort of like the line they make down the centre.  I’m also hoping they will look better after blocking.  (You can find a bunch of great videos on different knitting increases at knittinghelp.com.)

Au Lait is a sport weight yarn that is a combination of cotton and milk fibres.  Crazy, eh?  It feels a little bit like really, really soft kitchen cotton. Not the best comparison, but I figure most people have felt kitchen cotton dishcloths and can use that as a reference point.  Now, it is soft and the colours are lovely, but I don’t think I would buy this yarn again.  Unfortunately, parts of one of the balls had sections where the yarn was plied together much more tightly than the other sections.  I’m not sure if the second ball is like this too, since I only used able 35% of it (yay for scales to do calculations).

I was also a little concerned to discover that the tips of my fingers have taken on the slightest purple cast.  It seems to be washing off fine, except on my stitching/knitting finger, and this is probably due to my inability to keep a callus on that finger and the fact that it is very soft, new skin there.  (Ewww!  Sorry for sharing TMI.)  I’m just about to go soak the shawlette, and I hope that I won’t lose too much of the colour.  Hopefully I will have a lovely, well blocked, still colourful, dry shawlette in the next day or so.  (Cotton takes forever to dry!)

Next on the needles: that Christmas gift I’ve been working for the past couple of months.  I’m on the home stetch.  There are also a couple more Christmas gifts in the queue, and maybe a hat for Baby Man to match the scarf I made the other week.

As for cross stitch, I’m aiming to get the backstitching on Baby Man’s stocking done before next weekend.  I’m also planning on thinking about starting TW’s Tropical Dream if I can find some 20 count fabric.  (Seriously, why 20 count?)  And there is a wedding piece I should be working on, and I should start my stocking (TW’s of course), and all those Christmas ornaments, and, and, and. So, what am I going to do this afternoon?  Why, start Lizzie*Kate’s Peace, Love and a Cure just because I want to.

Ornaments, Taking Time, and Knitting for Me!

Well, it has been an interesting week.  Teresa Wentzler’s announcement on Monday thankfully didn’t set the tone for the week.  Although, I have to admit, I’m still pretty bummed about it.  But, I’ve sorted through my TW patterns and made a list of what I would like to get before they disappear, and also made a list of the few duplicates I have.  If you are looking for anything, let me know.  What I have extras of are designs that are in the Christmas and fantasy book collections.

As always, I’ve stitched up a storm this week.  I finished up Jeanette Douglas Designs’ Take Time to Read, which a few changes.  I ran out of the brown silk, so the lamp and fireplace in the bottom right look a little different, and I used medium gold instead of cream for the fireplace as well because of the colour of my fabric.  I also left off the flowers and “vine” around the edge so that this piece looks more like Take Time to Stitch.  Overall, I love it and I would like to thank Erica again for sending it to me.  (Notice it hasn’t been ironed yet.  There is no design called Take Time to Iron.)

I also finished the beading on Teresa Wentzler’s Sparkling Hearts.  There is still some cross stitching to do to finish this piece up, and I still need to figure out what to do about the back.  So, I’ll save the picture for a couple of days.

And, lastly, I finished up another class design from the Creativ Festival: Jennifer Aikman-Smith’s Perforated Paper Castle Ornament.  For some reason I had an awful time this with.  I kept having to pick out stitches.  It’s like I forgot how to count.  It turned out lovely though.  I do still need to add the dangles at the bottom and the cord at the top. (The front and back are the same size.  I didn’t mess with the laws of the universe.  I just took some bad pictures.)

My knitting has slowed this week, since there are only so many hours in the day.  And rather than work on Christmas gifts (it’s not like Christmas is just around the corner 😛 ), I’ve been knitting myself a small shawl/scarf-thingee.  The pattern is Skinny Ruffles Shawlette by Liden Heflin, and I’m using Dye-Versions Au-Lait in colourway Violetta.  The increases are backwards loops and are looking a little loose.  If they don’t tighten up with blocking, I’m just going to call that line down the centre a design feature. 🙂  Honestly, I do like the way it looks, but it definitely looks better on one side than the other.

And I have four thank yous today!  First, to Cath of Country Stitch, for going out of her way to help me find the right colour of red fabric on which to stitch something for my husband.  Her fabric is lovely, and this is the second time she has dyed something special for me.

Second, to Kat of Cross Eyed Kat/Kat Gets Cross Eyed, for the lovely trade for my Telsa scarf.  I now own almost every Cross Eyed Kat chart that I have been lusting after, and a lovely piece of PTP fabric.  Yay!  She is a very generous woman.

And speaking of generous women, a big thank you to Missy Ann.  I’ll show you why in a couple of weeks. But I will say that I am super excited because I am going to be able to stitch something I thought I never would be able too.

And one more thank you to Jenny of Jenn’s Counted Threads, who just offered me two TW charts from my wish list.  Yay!  Thank you!

Although I shouldn’t be,  I am always awed and surprised by the generosity and kindness of the women  I have met online who share my interest in cross stitch.  They all help to make my world a happier place.  I hope someone out there can say the same about me.

Goodbye TW

It’s a sad day for cross stitchers.  Teresa Wentzler has just announced that she will no longer be designing, and that all of her designs are now officially out of print.  TW Designworks is closing its doors.  You can read all about it here and on her blog here.

There are a lot of designers who’s work I really, really like: Jennifer Aikman-Smith of Dragon Dreams (who is only doing a little bit of designing these days), Thea Dueck of Victoria Sampler, Lynn Nicoletti (who has been ill for a while and isn’t designing much), Kat Rocha of Cross Eyed Kat, Laura Dickson of Enchanting Lair, among others.  But, honestly, my cross stitching heart belongs to Teresa Wentzler.  And, I hate to admit, but reading that she is giving up designing has made stitching seem a little less fun for me.  It’s not like I don’t have enough TW designs to last me the rest of my life (and still a few more to buy from PatternsOnline *cha-ching*), or that the other designers I like haven’t got great things to stitch.  It’s just that there won’t be any more TW designs to look forward too.  No Spring and Summer mini samplers, no giant Illuminata, no more TW dragons with their twisting tails.  (And not chance in hell that I will ever score a copy of You Were Hatched now.)

My stitching will go on, but there will always be an empty spot for TW.  She is a lovely lady, whom I’ve had the pleasure to meet a couple of times.  I wish her all the best in whatever she decides to do next.  I will hold out a little bit of hope that she will pick up her designing needle again one day.

In the meantime, I think I will look over the TW’s I have started and pick one out to work on once my current projects are done.  It seems only right.

And, on a happier note, I have three people to PIF!  Zeb of geekchixxx, Debra of  Debbie’s Stitch and Stuff, and Kat of Kat Gets Cross Eyed (and Cross Eyed Kat).  I’ll be sending you ladies an email later this evening, once I get Baby Man to sleep.

Here are the rules for the PIF again, as a reminder:

  1. Send no less than 5 stitching related items per person within the next 365 days.
  2. Items can be DMC, other threads, stitching needles, straight pins, buttons, scissors, ribbons, etc. – a combination of items such as 3 threads, 1 pack of straight pins and 1 pack of stitching needles or just 5 threads.
  3. The items must be new and not used. (Send things you’d be happy to receive.)
  4. If you win, you must be willing to post this PIF on your blog and do the same for at least 2 people.

November 2009 Goals

November already.  October was over in a blink of the eye, what with all the birthday, events, and goings on.  November is a little quieter. There are three birthdays this month, and a couple of events. It is a month spent racing the clock to get Christmas stitching done.  It’s also when I start to review the year, decluter, and get ready for the holidays.

Before I set my November goals, I should review my October goals:

  1. Finish all stitching except backstitching for Baby Man’s stocking
  2. Stitch and finish the La-D-Da design for the JCS Halloween issue (my SALsuffit project)
  3. Finish a Christmas gift
  4. Knit Baby Man a pumpkin hat
  5. Find a copy of the JCS ornament issue
  6. Stitch Voodoo Girl, and hopefully get her finished too so Voodoo Boy can have a girlfriend for Halloween
  7. Cast on another pair of socks so I have an on-the-go project again

I’m happy to report that I did fairly well in October.  In my post yesterday I shared my finished Halloween ornament/pillow from La-D-Da and Baby Man’s pumpkin hat.  I did find a copy of the JCS ornament issue, and I will be stitching some this month.  I finished one sock of a pair, but still need to cast on the second.  The Christmas gift I wanted to finish is getting there, but I got sidetracked by making Baby Man a scarf.  Voodoo Girl just didn’t happen, I ran out of month!

That leaves Baby Man’s stocking.  And here it is, with only the back stitching left to do:

Naughty or Nice by Dimensions

Naughty or Nice by Dimensions

I put the last few stitches in yesterday afternoon.  I’m going to let it rest for a few days before I tackle the back stitching because I am a little tired of it.  I spent the rest of the 31st working on my Sampler de Noel and a new shawl.

So, on to November goals:

  1. Stitch and finish at least three Christmas ornaments
  2. Finish the back stitching on Baby Man’s stocking
  3. Finish that Christmas gift
  4. Finish a second Christmas gift that is also ready started
  5. Finish the Pink Ribbon Socks
  6. Cross off at least one more design from my 2009 Goals list

I’d love to add getting caught up on Castles in the Air but I know that won’t happen.  Christmas stitching and knitting are the main goals for this month.

Don’t forget, you have until noon tomorrow to add your name to the list of people interested in my Pay It Forward.  Check out this post for more information.  I’ve already picked out some goodies to send.  And remember, you have an entire year to send out your packages, so don’t let the time of year hold you back.
