November SALsuffit

Finally, my SALsuffit post. Yes, I know I was supposed to post this on November 30th, and I know I said I would post it on December 1st, and I know it is December 2nd (how’d that happen?!).  But, really, I have some great excuses: bad lighting, company, really need to get some sleep, Baby Man teething (last morals, finally), etc.

So, for my November entry for SALsuffit, I finished up four ornaments using fabric, braid, felt and ribbon that I already had.  I also wanted to try framing Trick or Treat Fairy again (cutting the foamcore the right size this time…), but I ran out of November.

Daffycat's Reindeers

Daffycat's Reindeers

Winter Frost is by Patricia Ann Design, and was in last year’s JCS ornament issue.  I left off the outside border, and changed the treasures in the centre of the snowflakes to beads.  (I think that the treasures were much to large for the design.)

The reindeer are from Daffycat.  You can find Jinglebell here and Holly here.  One of the Holly ornaments is for my mom to give to her boss. I seem to have a fixation on reindeer this year, and would so love to the new Just Nan ornament and the one from Inkcircles.

December 2009 Goals

I should be posting my SALsuffit today. And, honestly, I do have a few things I finish-finished this month (actually this afternoon), but I am dead tired and don’t feel like taking picture right now. I gave blood this weekend, which always tires me out for a couple of days, and I was awake at 5:20 this morning because I’m weird. So, no pictures. Instead, I will review my November goals a day early.

  1. Stitch and finish at least three Christmas ornaments
  2. Finish the back stitching on Baby Man’s stocking
  3. Finish that Christmas gift
  4. Finish a second Christmas gift that is also ready started
  5. Finish the Pink Ribbon Socks
  6. Cross off at least one more design from my 2009 Goals list

Let’s see: Baby Man’s stocking is done, I’ve finished (and finish-finished) seven ornaments, finished three Christmas gifts (and have one more about half done), and finished the Pink Ribbon Socks.  I didn’t finish a design from my goal list, but I am counting that as complete too since I did finish You Were Hatched, which would have been on my goal list if I had had it or knew I was getting it.  If that makes any sense.  (Do I ever make any sense?)

My December goals are a little lighter, sort of.  Of course, most of them need to be accomplished before Christmas

  1. Sew up Baby Man’s stocking
  2. Knit a shawl before the 13th (ack!)
  3. Finish up Christmas gifts (2 or 3 more to go)
  4. Crochet some of these to give to visiting family (maybe 5 of them?)
  5. Crochet this for Baby Man as a Yule gift
  6. Figure out punchneedle
  7. Work on Baby Man’s birth sampler
  8. Get ready for the holidays before the holidays (ha!)

December is going to be busy.  Beyond all of that above, I’ll be going into the office at least one day (ack!), going to Gitta’s holiday open house sale (yay!), going to see King Tut (YAY!), going to see The Sound of Music, entertaining family (possibly twice), and goodness knows what else.

Life with Baby Man

I started this post this morning, sitting in the den in the dark.  I usually get up about a half an hour before everyone else so that I can enjoy some quiet time just for me.  Sometimes I knit, sometimes I do a little bit of work, and sometimes I just surf the Internet.  I only have the glow of the computer screen to light the room because I don’t want to disturb Baby Man.  When he wakes up I usually turn on the light in the den and allow him to play quietly in his room for another half an hour or so (depending on the noises I hear coming from his room).  This time in the morning is mine.  I don’t get much done, certainly no cross stitching in the poor light, but it helps me start my day.  I often think about adding a cup of tea to my morning routine, but I don’t want to make any  kitchen noises that could wake up Baby Man earlier.

I’m discovering that there is a real balancing act to being a mom.  It is like learning to be a wife, but even more intense.  You have to figure out a way to be there for the other person as much as possible, while still retaining everything that makes you you.  When it comes to being a mom that is really difficult because the other person starts off as a helpless baby, dependent on you for everything and with no notion that you might need some time and space for yourself. And as you begin to figure out how to balance your child’s demands with what you need, they get older and more independent and change everything.

Baby Man is 22-months old now. He isn’t a baby any more. When I look at him I see a little boy who is intelligent, independent, imaginative, funny, and very happy. I want him to always be like this. He only seems to get grumpy if his nap is delayed or if he is teething (and his last 4 molars are coming in right now). The only thing I would change is his eating habits. He likes to eat potato in any form, hot-dogs, yogurt, rice chips and bananas and that is about it. It is endless frustrating to us, but we are all coping. (I understand that it could be much worse.)

I’m thankful that I am able to stay home with Baby Man, and hope that I can do so at least until he starts school (but who knows what life will bring). I’ll miss having him as my daily companion when kindergarten starts in another few years. But, I think I will also enjoy having greater stretches of my day to myself. It will take a while to get used to, though, I think. Right now, when my husband takes him for a walk, I don’t know what to do with myself during the quiet time when they are gone.

Today, though, I’m happy to sneak in some knitting and stitching time whenever I can, as much as I can. Seeing all of Baby Man’s new accomplishments (High 5!) and hearing his new words and sentences go a long way towards letting me know that my time with him is well spent.

I’m ending this post several hours later. Baby Man is napping, and I’m taking a breather–doing laundry, tidying up, writing this post, and then doing some work. Some days, if I’m lucky or really tired, I take a nap too. Today I’m happy that Baby Man ate most of his breakfast and lunch and that his teeth aren’t bothering him too much. I look forward to him waking up, but also to when he goes to bed tonight so I can have some stitching time.

I was going to post a picture of Baby Man today, but I forgot to snap one before he went to sleep. So, I’m sharing my latest project instead: Winter Frost by Patricia Ann Designs from the 2008 JCS ornament issue. I’ve left of the border and changed the treasures in the centre of the snowflakes to beads (the treasures look much too big and heavy).

Three Down, Endless Amounts to Go

I’m sure no one is surprised that this post didn’t come as soon as I said it would.  But I have a good reason: I wanted to finish off a couple of more pieces.

First, I’ve finished Teresa Wentzler’s You Were Hatched, which the generous Missy Ann lent to me.  It’s already back in the mail, a week after I got it, and will hopefully arrive home safe and sound.  And, truthfully, it isn’t completely done.  I haven’t back-stitched the Celtic knots in the corner.  I’m going to leave them until I find a frame, and then do them in either gold or silver, depending on what suits the frame.  Because of the colour changes in the Dinky Dyes silk, it will be easy for me to do the back-stitching without a chart.  (And the picture on TW’s site is good enough to follow if I run into trouble.)

I also finished back-stitching Baby Man’s Christmas stocking.  I am so pleased with it, even though Dimensions kits aren’t my favourite things to stitch.  Now I  just need to iron it and get up the nerve to sew it up.

And, I’ve finished Teresa Wentzler’s Sparkling Hearts, a class piece from this fall’s CreativFestival.  I stitched the back in DMC using this conversion chart from Mill Hill.  The conversion isn’t perfect (I think the red in the corners is especially off), but it is good enough for the back of an ornament.  If I were to stitch it again, I think I would use antique brown perforated paper rather than the cream.  But, I love it and it will look really good on my Christmas tree.  (Erica also finished her’s, as a pin, and you can see it here.)  Note that the picture does not capture the sparkle of the front at all.  It is truly lovely.

I’ve already started a new big project.  Sadly, not my own Christmas stocking (I’m still debating what I will do for me), but rather a gift for someone else.  And I’ve got a new Christmas ornament to start soon, and, and, and.  The list is endless.

Speaking of which, don’t forget to check out this thread on the TW board about a SAL of one of her collaboration designs.  I’m still leaning towards stitching Sewing the Seeds, and I think we will all be stitching the design we like the most/have access to.

I also totally forgot to mention something about the CreativFestival last month.  I got to meet June Gilbank of Planet June again, and I showed her the violets that I crocheted from her lovely pattern.  She has a picture of both of our pieces on her blog here; mine is on the right.  (As an aside, I am totally lusting after her new Christmas tree pattern.)

PIF Sent and Recieved

Yet again the week has flown by, and somehow I find myself on Friday unsure of what exactly happened.  I suspect that most of the problem lies with Baby Man, who now likes to take his diaper off when he lies down to sleep.  This is apparently a sign that he is ready for potty training (or that he is trying to drive me crazy).  Unfortunately, I’m not ready for potty training.  It remains to be seen  how this will develop.

I do have some stitching and knitting projects to share, but I forgot to take pictures before the sun went down and I lost the light.  Hopefully I can get around to that tomorrow.

I did get my PIF package from Melissa of Epic Stitching on Tuesday.  (See, I am behind.)  She sent me a skein of DMC, a spool of blending filament, a skein of GAST, a flower button and a chart from Heart in Hand.  (I’m sure you can guess why she picked that letter.)

pif

See what I mean about bad pictures after sunset.

And since I am a good girl, I sent off my PIF packages this week.  Zeb, Kat and Deb should be getting their packages within a week or so.  Well, longer for Zeb since she is sooooo far away!  I hope those ladies like what I picked out for them.

SAL for TW and More

As I’m sure we all probably know, the Legends and Sewing the Seeds designs were a collaboration between Teresa Wentzler, Jennifer Aikman-Smith (Dragon Dreams) and Karen Weaver (Black Swan). With Teresa’s announcement of her retirement from needlework designing, all three of these talented and well loved designers are no longer actively designing. (Yes, Jennifer still designs occasionally, but she announced her retirement plans last year.) I thought that it might be nice to honour these ladies by having a stitch along of one of their joint designs.

The choices are Legend of the Spellcasters, Legend of the the Dragons or Sewing the Seeds of Friendship, Hope and Love. Of these three designs, only Sewing the Seeds is still avaliable from Hoffman (as Sewing Seeds Sampler, item #05-2126), which might make it the best choice. However, I’d love to know what everyone thinks.

I’m aiming to start the SAL on January 1st, and to run it all year.  If you’d like to join in, please head over to the TW board here, or leave a comment on my blog below. I’d like to run things through the TW board since it is free, allows everyone to post pictures, and provides a way to have discussions.  But I’m also happy to welcome anyone who wants to just post progress through their blog.
