Friday Five

Here is this week’s Friday Five.

1. Is the name you have now the same name that’s on your birth certificate? If not, what’s changed?

Yes, it is the same. However, I am getting married in about a year, so I might change my last name then. Although, I’m really not sure. It’s a difficult decision

2. If you could change your name (first, middle and/or last), what would it be?

I used to dream about changing my name when I was younger. I wanted a first name that could be shortened into a cute nickname, and I wanted a middle name that was a bit more elegant. And most of all, I wanted initials that weren’t so silly – HEH just didn’t cut it. But now that I’ve grown, I’ve come to appreciate my name. I’m still not overly fond of my middle name, so I just don’t use it very often. Besides, I’ve got an alias, why would I need to change my real name? 🙂

3. Why were you named what you were? (Is there a story behind it? Who specifically was responsible for naming you?)

My parent’s were originally expecting a boy, who they were planning on naming Dennis. I came as a bit of a surprise, but they picked my name more or less because there was no way to shorten it into a nickname. Why that was an issue, I have no idea.

4. Are there any names you really hate or love? What are they and why?

I’m not really keen on the name Michelle. No offense to any Michelles who may be reading this. My problem with that name is that when someone forgets my name, I am, without fail, called Michelle by them. It’s very odd. This has happened many times with people who do not know each other, or who I have not mentioned this fact to.

5. Is the analysis of your name at kabalarians.com accurate? How or how isn’t it?

It is somewhat accurate. I don’t think that I am particularly refined or easy-going, although I’d like to be. I do find myself in a bit of a rut right now, although I’m not sure it is procrastination. I think I am rather sympathetic, and I do think that I have been taken advantage of in the past because of that. And I am the sort of person that people like to share their problems with, and I do my best to help or offer some good advice. I also do lack self-confidence.

Heavy Weather

Around the Pond, summer is reminding us that it isn’t quite gone yet. Yesterday it was 25°C (77°F), which doesn’t sound very hot. But as the saying goes, it’s not the heat but the humidity that gets you. The humidex (what it feels like with the humidity factored in) was 32°C (90°), and that’s darn warm. However, as soon as the sun went down, the temperature dropped to a lovely 17°C (63°F).

Weather is obviously the topic on my mind today. It’s not surprising, seeing as I’m a Canadian. Really, we haven’t much to talk about other then the weather, hockey, and American politics. Anyway, I’ve come to realise that I’m a bit odd when it comes to weather. It seems that most people love hot summer days, or cool, crisp winter days. Fall and spring are okay too, as long as it doesn’t rain to much and it’s mild. Well, I’m quite the opposite. I love cooler summer days and thunder storms. I love snow in the winter. And the spring and fall should be full of rain. quanta would probably chime in here and say that I complain bitterly when the weather is like that. Yeah, I probably do, but I enjoy it anyway. Why? Because I love to listen to the sound of the rain, and I love the way it makes the grass and flowers grow. And snow in the winter makes a dull, dark city look a little magical. And goodness knows we could all use a wee bit more magic in our lives.

Two Weeks Notice

I’ve given up! I can’t stand another minute at my job. For goodness sakes, when you go shopping, remember that the store employees are people too! If you aren’t going to buy something, don’t have the employees take down every package looking for something, or monopolise their time when the store is full of people. Be courteous! And don’t come into the store five minutes before closing if all you are going to do is browse. The employees would like to get tidied up for the night and head home to their families.

I’ve also given up because this job just isn’t challenging enough. Retail not challenging, surprise. I’ve got a good education and I’m pretty smart, but I just can’t find job in my field in this awful city. (Well, it’s not that awful. I’m just frustrated by the lack of work here.) I hope quanta makes up his mind about moving closer to TO soon. I’m going crazy here. This city is supposedly my home, but I don’t feel at home. And the uncertainty of not know how long we will stay here is getting to me. Argh!

The Early Arrival of Autumn

It’s funny how the start of September heralds the beginning of Autumn, even though it’s still some twenty-odd days away. There usually isn’t a significant change in temperature from Labour Day to September 2nd, yet is seems like Autumn has begun. The kids are back to school, business are starting to get busy again, even TV seems to awake from its summer slumber. Looking out my window, I see that even the leaves have begun to change, and I no longer hear the buzzing song of the cicada when I stop to listen.

September also feels a bit like the beginning of the year to me. I think that might be the influence of so many years at school. I figure I spent about nineteen years in school, all total. That’s nineteen Septembers where the world did seem to start fresh. New teachers, new friends, new things to learn. This is my third September not returning to school, yet I still feel a bit of that “new year” feeling. I’ve picked up my books to study again – for those certifications I keep putting off. I’ve dusted of my datebook and pulled out my journal.

Autumn has become a time of reflection for me. This is especially true when the Wheel turns closer to Samhain. Right now is the time I begin to pull the pieces of my life together. I pick up projects that were forgotten in the heat of summer. I write about some of the things that happened. And I think, a lot. Soon I will being to put things together, to reflect on what I have done this year, on how far I have come. I wonder what I will discover.

What a Weekend!

It’s been a rough weekend. I’m glad it’s over. Saturday was a so-so day at work. I had a couple of impolite customers. (When you are shopping, remember that the staff is only doing their job. They have no real say in store policies, pricing, etc.) Sunday at work was okay too. My wonderful neighbour picked me up, and told me that more then half his company has been laid off. Poor guy. 🙁 He still has a job, but for how long, he wonders. I try to cheer him up, and tell him that August is over, so nothing else bad can happen this month. Except, oh, the apartment building burning down. Well, I was woken up at 4 am by the fire alarm. I meet my neighbour on the fire stairs, and he says “You need to watch what you say.” Opps! Thankfully it was a false alarm, but my night of sleep was shot. I stay up, reading and playing computer games. Come afternoon I decided to clean house. No problem, I’m not to sleep deprived. Right! I dropped my deck chair on my foot and took a huge hunk of skin out of my toe. I’m not going to be able to wear shoes for a few days. Looks like I get some time off work after all. *sigh* So much for going to hunt down my favourite magazine this afternoon.

If I look on the bright side, since I’m pretty much tied to the house until the weekend, I should be able to get a lot of writing done. I’ve ran out of thread, so my sewing project has been put on hold. No worries though, there are always tons of things to do!

Pagan Speak – August 2003 – Oaths

Pagan Speak for August 2003
Topic 2: Oaths
The taking of oaths is an integral part of many religious ceremonies. What types of oaths do you think are appropriate or inappropriate? Is it ever OK to break an oath? What are the consequences to breaking an oath?

When someone talks about oaths, I generally get the creeps. I mean, if you aren’t doing anything illegal, or immoral, or really weird, why do you need an oath? Yeah, I know there are a lot more to oaths then just asking people to cover up or not reveal what’s going on.

Looking at oaths a little deeper, I can see how they are useful, in some situations. Requiring an oath before teaching someone some knowledge can help to make sure that the student recognises the importance of what they are learning. The oath can also help to reinforce some of the ideas, especially if the lesson include ideas about how to uphold a faith or present yourself to the world.

I’m not sure I agree with oaths of secrecy as part of joining a society. Personally, I’ve never been part of a “secret society”, so perhaps that colours my opinion. But I tend to see their oaths and “secrecy” as a bit silly. I suppose they have their place though.

As for breaking an oath, I think there are times when it is appropriate. If you have sworn an oath of secrecy, it would be appropriate to break it if something illegal occurs. And in this case, there should be no ramifications arising from the breaking. But if an oath is broken for no good reason, then some sort of consequence is appropriate. For example, if you swear an oath to uphold your faith against all detractors, yet you consistantly allow friends make fun of your faith, then you have broken your oath. The consequeneces in this case would be personal, I believe, but also should be imposed by the group to which you swore the oath. Perhaps it would be wise to revisit some lessons, or to do some volunteering, or something similar.
