Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day everyone! I hope that at the very least you have all been able to get outside and enjoy the wonderful spring flowers. I think Earth Day should be a sort of unoffical ninth Sabbat for Wiccans.

Anyway, I’ve had a busy, busy day with little time to sit and write. Hopefully this evening I will be able to final write some pieces on some things that I have been thinking about for ages. Until then, all I can offer is a result of a quiz. Enjoy!

Grammar God!
You are a GRAMMAR GOD!

If your mission in life is not already to
preserve the English tongue, it should be.
Congratulations and thank you!

How grammatically sound are you?

A Price on Mom

I found this article through The Zero Boss. I guess I’m just really cheap, because my mom’s gift won’t be part of that estimated $1 billion. (Uhh… if they considered Canada in that figure, which they probably didn’t. But you know what I mean.) That isn’t to say that I don’t think my mom isn’t important, and that I’m not getting her a gift. Quite the contrary.

This year I hope to have my mom come for a visit so I can make a nice dinner for her. She has always wanted to try some real Chinese food, so that’s what on the menu so far. (I make a good crab and cream corn soup.) I also plan to give her a homemade gift. Personally, I know I would rather recieve a gift that someone spent 20+ hours making, instead of some smelly candle or sparkly do-dad that they picked up on their last trip to the mall. (Note to quanta: emeralds aren’t sparkly do-dads, so feel free to buy those for me!)

As for the rest of the figures in the fancy “Top Spending Holidays” graphic, it is no wonder that Americans are so highly in debt. (And Canadian’s aren’t far behind them, from what I understand.) It also has me wondering where my $100 Valentine’s Day gift is…

Anything to Make a Yuan

quanta and I often have discussions about the state of the world. Usually they begin because I am upset about another news story where a company lays off people because their profit (meaning they are actually making money) isn’t as high as they would like, or some other news story to do with people trying to make money at the expensive of others. I’m of the opinion that it isn’t always about making money, sometimes it really should be about making your customer happy or making a great product, even if that means cutting your profit or losing money. Obviously my opinion is in the minority.

This morning I came across a news story that makes me so angry and sad: CBC Newsworld – Chinese babies die after fake formula feeding. And why did this happen? The consumer protection laws in China are all but non-existent, so companies often pirate products and sell them cheaply and/or make a huge profit. We had a couple of software CDs, which quanta picked up when he was in Hong Kong a few years ago, floating around here for the longest time. They held a few thousand dollars worth of programs, but I believe he paid less then $10 for them. Another example would be the faux Harry Potter book that was being sold in China a few years back. (To say nothing of my SailorNoon [yes, Noon] pencil boxes.) These acts of piracy are almost excusable. Software is expensive in China, and can be hard to get. And hey, wasn’t J.K. Rowling really taking to long to write that book anyway? But the people who made this baby formula, using one gram of protein per 100 grams (an 1/18th of the requirement) put babies lives in danger just to make a buck, uhhhh… just to make a yuan.

I hope that this tragedy will stir some action in China, and that we will see the customer protection laws improved. I also hope that these people are found and charged with 50 counts of murder. Because, to my mind, they knowingly murdered these babies. What mother would question the food she feeds her child if it seemingly came with the proper seals? Yet the manufacturer knowingly failed to provide the proper protein to keep these babies alive.

Really, this just makes me so sad. I hope some action will be taken, and I also hope that these news story gets some air time today on the big news stations.

A New Reflection

The new face of Reflections is now here! I’d like to thank quanta ever so much for all the hard work. You’ve done a wonderful job, sweetheart!

This new template is a little more graphic intensive then my old one, but just slightly so. Most of the slow downs today seem to be coming from our webspace provider, so please be patient. And please let me know if you discover something that is horribly broken.

A few more tweaks will be happening around here this week. Most will be behind the scenes, and hardly noticable. I will be cleaning up old entries, changing category names and content, etc. Reflections was orginally quickly put together with the intention of fixing it up and making it feel like home, as it were, when I had the time. Well, ten months have gone past so it is about darn time I get around to making those changes.

My Return

I’m back, just like I said I would be. 🙂 Last week was full of ups and downs, but over all I enjoyed it. I took the time to recharge and think. I went to a career fair (which was a bust), and spent a day at the ROM. I walked, and then walked some more. I took myself out for ice cream. I read books, and I cooked wonderful meals for quanta and myself. And, most importantly, I literally took some time to stop and smell the flowers.

Part of the reason I took a break from blogging was because I was a little unsure of where I want to take Reflections. Most of my entries are about issues relating to Wicca, spirituality and Tarot, and those that aren’t are usually just memes. I actually really enjoy doing memes. You, Dear Reader, may not get much out of them, but they are surprisingly good at revealing me to me.

So, I’ve been thinking about how I want to see things evolve around here. First, I will certainly continue writing entries on topics like Wicca and spirituality. But I want to write a little more about me, about who I am. Again, Dear Reader, this may or may not mean very much to you. However, I have come to realize that the blogging process is about me, and about discovering who I am. It may seem strange to you that I claim not to know who I am, but it really isn’t that strange at all. Life has a funny way of stopping us from discovering who we are, if we let it. And I’m not willing to let it get in the way anymore.

Reflections will also be getting a facelift sometime within the next week. I have really enjoyed this template from Quixotic Pixels, but it is time for a change. quanta has been diligently working away on a new template that reflects my personality a little better, as well as nicely complementing my main site The Lotus Pond.

I hope all my Gentle Readers will enjoy the changes, and stick around to discover who I really am. I know I can’t wait to find out.

A Short Break

I’m taking a short break from blogging this week. I will be back by Monday. I just need a little bit of time to recharge and think. I do promise I will be back though. So many people seem to say they are taking a break and then disappear completely. I won’t be one of those! :cat:

Unconscious Mutterings

Ah, Easter Sunday. Even though I am not Christian, I do still enjoy Easter Sunday. On Easter Sunday nearly every store is closed. People are at home, enjoying time with their family. The same may be true of Christmas, but the commercialization of that holiday disturbs me to no end.

Anyway, before I get started on my chores for today, here is this week’s Unconscious Mutterings.

  1. Boxing::Sport
