“Murder” Shows

I like to watch “murder shows.” (At least that is what quanta calls them.) These are fictional shows like Law and Order, CIS and Murder She Wrote, as well as real-life shows like American Justice, City Confidential and Cold Case Files. I’m not sure why I like to watch them. I don’t like blood; I think killing people is wrong; and seeing someone victimized is just awful. Yet, for some reason, I am completely drawn in by these shows.

Yesterday afternoon I was sitting on the sofa, typing away on my laptop, watching Detective Beat on A&E. While listen to two detectives trying to discover the identity of a body, I was surfing the web looking at Wiccan websites and my cat was snuggling next to me begging for a head scratch. Then it came to me: Why am I watching a show like this? What does it add to my life? I know people are killed all over the world, often for stupid reasons. I’m aware of that, so why am I constantly watching shows about it. I’m on a news fast to get away from stuff like this, so why watch TV shows about?

I wonder if I can grow spiritual and learn about myself if I am obsessed with watching “murder shows.” What do they add to my life? Could my time be better spent doing something else? I think so.

A Story and a Dead Scanner

November is getting closer and closer, and I have yet to come up with a good idea for my National Novel Writing Month novel. I just have a whispering of a thought that might grow into an idea. What I do know is that I will have a female protagonist. This only makes sense to me since I am a woman, and I have no idea how men think. I would also like my novel to have some sort of spiritual theme. I don’t want to write a fictionalized Wiccan “how-to” book or anything like that. What I would like is to have some of the ideals of the Wiccan faith sort of woven into my story. The characters won’t be Wiccan, nor while they belong to the fictional Mother Goddess religion that some like to think existed in the ancient past. I would like to develop some sort of faith that has ideals like the Rede and the Three Fold Law, and use the story to explore those ideas.

I’m really looking forward to writing this novel. Actually, I’m a little scared because I think I am going to learn a lot about myself. There are things inside that I never get around to working out, and I’m pretty sure some of them will escape into my writing.

On the computer front, my poor scanner has died. 🙁 I was in the middle of scanning some papers this morning, and with three left to go it gave up the ghost. It never was a wonder piece of machinery, but it did the job. It was put to the most use during the last couple of years of university when I had to constantly scan class notes for Dr. Sexy. I’ll tinker with it a little more this afternoon, but I think it’s time I gave it up.

I’ve also fallen in love with the font Nadianne. However, fonts.com wants $22 for it! Yikes! I think I’ll be going through some old CorelDRAW discs to see if I can find a similar font.

Shallow

I’ve felt particularly shallow lately. It’s not that I’ve been acting or thinking any different, it’s more like I am more aware of how I am and how I present myself. It’s not that I am particularly unhappy with my life. I realize that my failures and setbacks are all caused by my actions or inactions. It is more like I have come to realize that some of my problems and interests really aren’t as important as I think they are.

I think I take myself, and life, just a little to seriously. I see myself taken in by something I realize is silly or just meant to make money, like commercials and catalogues. I get annoyed at myself for my weak will. (On day two, I’ve already fallen off my diet.) I’m wondering how I can be a good and spiritual person and still have all these failings. Guilt isn’t part of Wicca though, so I need to do something. It is hard to worship joyfully when you aren’t happy with yourself.

“Friday” Five

Here is the Friday Five for the past week. I’m a bit late. 🙂

1. Name five things in your refrigerator.
Luckily I went shopping right after I came home from my holiday, otherwise there would only be condiments in the fridge. So I’ve got: skim milk, 2% milk, lettuce, tomato juice, and oyster sauce.

2. Name five things in your freezer.
Garlic and herb salmon, extra lean ground beef, chicken and mushroom dumplings, chicken breasts, and a ham.

3. Name five things under your kitchen sink.
Lots of empty bags, a couple of almost gone candles, carpet cleaner, dishwasher soap, and Windex.

4. Name five things around your computer.
I’m writing this on my laptop, so I’ll pick things from my living room desk. There is a “brass” piano lamp, a little happy Buddha, Sarah Ban Breathnach’s Hold That Thought calendar, a pretty box I made, and a fluffy purple Attic Treasures Beanie Baby named Azalea. You can see a picture here.

5. Name five things in your medicine cabinet.
I haven’t got a medicine cabinet. I can name five things on my bathroom counter that should be in my medicine cabinet. There is some contact solution, two cases for contact lenses, raspberry shower gel that hasn’t made it into the shower yet, quanta’s hair stuff, and a tub of toothpaste.

Vegas Brides

Well, we’ve been to Vegas and back and we aren’t married. There sure were a hack of a lot of brides there though. quanta was quick to point out that none of them looked particularly happy. I guess I wouldn’t look too happy either if I knew a casino full of strangers was staring at me.

What I noticed most about the brides was that none of them had a dress quite as pretty as the one I bought. Yeah, I was feeling a little catty. Also, it is probably a lot easier, and more comfortable in that darn heat, to wear a simpler dress.

So, I guess I’d better get back to work on planning a wedding. *sigh* I still think getting married in Las Vegas would have been easier.

Still Alive!

I’m writing a quick entry to let everyone know that I am still alive. I’ve just returned from a rather long trip – part of it was spent visiting family and the other part was spent in Las Vegas. I enjoyed my trip, but I am very glad to be back home. Hopefully I will have another entry up in a day or so. First, I need to unpack and relax.

Friday Five

Yet another Friday Five. Isn’t it nice to get to know me?

1. Do you watch sports? If so, which ones?
I occasionally watch hockey. I’m Canadian, and I think there is a law somewhere that we must watch hockey at least once a year. 🙂

2. What/who are your favourite sports teams and/or favourite athletes?
I’m a Toronto Maple Leafs fan. Again, it is something that is almost mandatory.

3. Are there any sports you hate?
I’m not fond of golf or curling.

4. Have you ever been to a sports event?
I’ve been to a couple of MLB baseball games in Toronto. I’ve also been to quite a few armature games, like my high school football team and the hockey games of a friend.

5. Do/did you play any sports (in school or other)? How long did you play?
I have never belonged to any team sports. I’m not very competitive, so I don’t enjoy that sort of thing. However, I used to love to run until I started developing problems with my knees.
