Wedding

I’ve started a new blog for all my thoughts about my upcoming wedding. If you are interested, it can be found here: Wedding Thoughts.

quanta’s Mom

Last night quanta called his mom to let her know that we are engaged. She didn’t approve, which really comes as no surprise. She thinks we aren’t ready, that we don’t have enough money, etc. Sometimes I get really annoyed with the emphasis that his family places on money. We are just a few years out of university, and already quanta makes more money then my mom and dad combined. Sure, we come from two different social classes, but money isn’t everything.

Anyway, listening to quanta’s end of the phone conversation, I was left feeling like some sort of gold digger. She seems to think that I am taking advantage of her only son, and doesn’t realise that we really do love each other. I wonder if us being in love is important to her at all. I am really very upset about all of this. If his mother doesn’t approve, she really can make my life difficult, or at least try too.

At least now we have a good idea that they won’t help us with the wedding itself. I can start planning things based on that.

Funny How Things Change… Or Don’t

I am taking part in Project Gutenberg’s Distributed Proofreading project. For the first round you get a page of scanned from the original work and the corresponding page from the OCR software. You then check the OCR text to make sure it is correct, making changes to reflect the proofing guidelines. It’s pretty simple and a lot of fun.

The book I’m working on this morning is Queechy by Elizabeth Wetherell. I’m not 100% sure when it was written, but it obviously takes place before the American Civil War. The page on am working on now contains a discussion between a young American girl and an older British man. They are speaking of how the British have abolished slavery but the Americans have not. The man says that Americans are prejudiced, and then says the following:

” Why,” said Mr. Stackpole,–” in their absurd opposition to all
the old and tried forms of things, and rancourous dislike of those
who uphold them; and in their pertinacity on every point where
they might be set right, and impatience of hearing the truth.”

Reading that passage, I think that perhaps half of that is still true and the other half is quite the opposite now. It’s funny how things change, and how they stay the same.

A Ring is Such a Simple Thing

After two long years of hoping for quanta to make up his mind, last night he finally asked me to marry him. He waited until 40 minutes before the end of my semi-humorously applied deadline to ask me. The ring is beautiful, and I am still partly in shock. It hasn’t really hit me yet. I mean, I’ve sort of thought for a long time that quanta and I would always be together. But to have this symbol of that commitment… well… it’s amazing. He is a good man, and I am very lucky.

Call Me Oscar

I had a bad day yesterday. After my initial triumph of getting my template to work in MT things went sharply down hill. I added MTAmazon to my template, but it wasn’t updating my wish list right. Then I was trying to reorganize my website into directories, following some instructions for my menu given to me early by quanta, and that wasn’t going right. He kept telling me about half of what I was supposed to be doing, expecting to some how magically know the rest. There were 100 little things like that all day.

So, in the evening we decide to go see a Russian art movie called Russian Ark. (Is it just me, or does that poster remind you of Titanic?) On they way to the theater, I apologize to quanta for being grouchy. He said he hadn’t noticed. What the heck? I had a horrible day. I asked if I was always so grouchy, and he said I pretty much was. Ouch! Talk about a wake up call. I like to think I live mindfully, but I obviously don’t. I guess it is time to make some changes, but I don’t know where to being.

As for the movie. Well… it was a Russian art film. It was technical stunning, the whole idea of one continuous shot for the whole movie. The idea, a tour through the Hermitage with some disembodied man and a 19th century French aristocrat, was a bit lacking. To top it off, there weren’t enough subtitles. I get the feeling that some of the scenes would have been much more interesting if we knew what the extras were saying.

So I Was Wrong. Big Deal.

Yesterday I was pretty annoyed with MovableType. For a program that is supposedly easy to use, it was actually a royal pain. The lovely template I am using just didn’t want to work. Of course, that was partly due to my lack of knowledge about MT, and partly because it came with no instructions. After working on it for several hours yesterday I was about to chuck the whole idea of a blog. Really, that probably was my best idea all day. But, after a good night’s sleep (or as good as I ever get), I started fresh on things this morning. The archive pages are up, and pretty. Links have been updated, and I’ve even added a nifty little moon phase app. Why? Well, I’m Wiccan. The moon is pretty darn important.

So, what’s next? No more playing about with the darn templates! It’s a waste of time that can be better spent doing other things. Although… I would like to change the comments and trackback window. *twitch* I’d like to start focusing on entries, obviously. I’m not sure what direction they will take though. I have called this journal Reflections in the Pond to tie in with my website The Lotus Pond. The site focuses on my ideas about Wicca, Tarot and spirituality. I meant for it to detail my personal journey, but instead it is turning into a series of educational articles. Perhaps I can use this blog for my… reflections! (Yeah, I need more sleep.)

My little list from yesterday is pretty much complete. What should I work on next? How about:

  • More essays for The Lotus Pond
  • Those darn comments and trackback windows *twitch*
  • Read, read, read

I do really want to dive into a couple of books I’ve got, and I’m desperate to spend some time with Uncle Al’s Thoth Tarot and Book of Thoth. So much to do, and so little time.
