Another Year Older, Another Year as a Mother

I’m 32 today.  32.  Not 22.  Not even 29.  I’m now uncomfortably into my 3os.  Oddly, I still feel like an awkward teenager most of the time.  I still feel like everyone knows more than me, and that I have a lot of growing up to do.  I feel like I’m just playing at being an adult, at owing a home, having a mortgage and investments.  And the baby, where the heck did he come from?

Sometimes I think that we should be tested as we get older.  If we fail to prove that we are responsible adults then we aren’t allowed to get older, drive a car or own a house.  We would have to stay teens until we could prove that we are smart enough to remember to take an umbrella on a day calling for rain, kind enough to give up seats on public transportation for the elderly, and intelligent enough to manage money well.  But, if that were the case, we would be a nation of teenagers, with hardly an adult in sight to set us straight.

Some days I am distressed by how young I still feel, by how different I am from what I think a person in their 30s should be.  I feel like I have so much growing up still to do, and so much to learn about responsible spending and how to interact with other people.  But there are days, most of them to tell the truth, where I am happy being me even if I come across as a bit silly and maybe even a bit immature for my age.

Besides being my birthday, today is also Mother’s Day.  (Go call your mom!)  It is my second one, and I’m still a bit resentful of it being so close to my birthday.  But I am blessed with the amazing Baby Man who I know loves his Mommy very much.  I can’t wait until he is old enough to make me a Mother’s Day card.  But until then, I’ll cherish every card his daddy “helps” him buy, and I know his grandma feels the same way about the cards he gives her. 🙂

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms and grandmothers out there.  And happy birthday to all the May babies too.

What are You Worth?

While I was poking around on some blogs today, I came across some quizes that Wendy Knits had taken a few days ago. So, I thought I’d give them a whirl.

First, I’m worth a lot of money. Yay me! Because this is an American-centric quiz, I had to guess on things like SAT scores and GPA (I picked average numbers for these). And my postal code didn’t register as a location, so I got no points for it. Still, US$2.09 million is nice. I feel expensive!

On the IQ test I scored 129.  I’ve scored higher on other tests, so I blame this lower score on the brain shrink that comes from having a baby… ignoring the fact that he is almost 16 months old now and my brain was supposed to return to normal size by the time he was six months old…

And, as further proof that I am no longer as smart as I think I am:

Seriously, having a child has been bad for my intellect.  What did you score?

Back on the Knitting Wagon

I’m back on the knitting wagon after having nothing but bad luck for nearly the past week.  (The failed Lily of the Valley Stole and two or three attempts at getting the right gauge with some Cascade Fixation socks kinda put me off knitting for a few days.)  So, yesterday afternoon I whipped up a guage swatch for my Lotus Blossom Shawl and got guage the first time!  Wow!  Here’s what it looks like unblocked.Lotus Blossom Shawl Swatch

The yarn is Blue Heron’s Egyptian Mercerized Cotton in colourway Violet Fields, a lovely 100% lace weight cotton that is knitting up wonderfully.  It isn’t going to block too well, but that’s okay.  Here’s my Ravely project page.  (You need to be a member of Ravely to view my project pages.)

I also started the Soft Drawstring Pouch from Last-Minute Knitted Gifts by Joelle Hoverson. I’m using Berroco Pure Pima in colourway 2254 Sachet. It is a quick, if somewhat boring knit. My plan, now that I am past the eyelet row, is just to keep going until I run out of yarn. I’d like to line it with some silk dupioni and use it as a bag to hold whatever sock project I’m working on.  Here’s the project page for this bag.

Yesterday was TW Wednesday, so I did manage to find some time to work on Delightful Dragon.  I’m finished all the cross stitches for the front section and am now working on the backstitching.  I do still need to add the blending filament to a couple of the colours, but I think it looks great!  It just makes me smile.

Lastly, a bonus picture of Baby Man wearing the sweater I knit for him at the end of last year.  (My Ravely project page for French Stripes.)  Isn’t he a cutie?  I will definitely be knitting this again in a larger size when he grows out of it.  Hopefully I will have a picture of him in his jacket in the next couple of days.

Radio Killed the News Anchor

I’ve spent the last couple of days listening to the radio instead of watching TV during the day.  Oddly, I’ve found that is has already made a bit of a change.  Mostly, I’m not so darn worried about the Swine Flu or the Global Economic Meltdown Crisis.  I think hearing a very condensed version of the news about once an hour, rather than the endless news offered on TV, sandwiched between lovely classical music makes everything much more pleasant.

OMG, 1 in 4 of us will get the Swine Flu according to the news!  Whaa!  Oh, but wait, this is a lovely and relax Mozart piece.  And so goes my day.  I’m hoping, also, that Baby Man is absorbing some culture by some sort of osmosis from all this radio listening.  Either that, or he is going to be able to put me in a very spiffy retirement home thanks to all the commercials they run during the day.

Seriously though, I think there is something to be said for removing yourself from the endless 24 hour news cycle on TV and the Internet.  Listening to the radio I learn the about the most important news stories, and I can choose to follow up with them online or not.  I can also tune out the news and just focus on the lovely music, something you can’t do when watching CNN or CBC Newsworld.  Why not turn off the TV for a little while this week and try the radio.

Shawls and Fairies

First, a quick update on my aunt and uncle who were in Mexico.  They made it safely home on Monday, without a single sniffle between the two of them.  It turns out that the part of Mexico where they were staying has had no cases of the flu.  So,  that’s all good.  As for the bad news, I heard on the radio today that some “experts” say that as many as 1 in 4 of us could get this new flu.  I’ll get my box of tissues ready.  😛

On a much happier note, I am almost finished Letter H by Nora Corbett.  I changed a lot of the colours and most of the beads.  Actually, I’m not quite done with it yet because I’m not sure what colour of beads to subsitute for the golden 02045.  I’m leaning towards a silver, maybe 02022.

Fibres: Crescent Colours and DMC cotton floss
Beads: Mill Hill
Fabric: 32ct. Lugana Silkweaver Solo

For those interested in what I changed, I’ll be posting a list on my website and adding a link here when it is done.  You can now find the conversion here: Letter H Conversion.

I’ve also been working away on the Never Ending Blue Shawl of Doom, which is now past the halfway point. Yay!  As you can see from the picture, the design on the back  is very subtle because of the variegated yarn.  I actually kind of like the effect, and I’m very happy with the piece over all.

Pentacle Shawl

Late last week I started work on my Lily of the Valley Stole, but I ripped it out the other night.  I think that it was just a little too advanced for my newish knitting skills.  The nupps were pretty difficult to get right.  I will definitely try it again, but after I become a little more experienced.  My plan is to try another, easier, lace project first. (The Lotus Blossom Shawl, which I bought all the materials for back in October.)  And, I’m also going to do these Lily of the Valley socks to get some experience with nupps.

Right now I’m working on Delightful Dragon Scissor Fob by Teresa Wentztler and Lily of the Valley Fairy by Nora Corbett.  I’ll have some pictures of them to share later in the week.

Flu or Bacon…

I’ve been thinking a lot about what to say about the Swine Flu, or H1N1, or the Mexican Flu, or whatever it is that we are supposed to call it today.  And, really, what can I say that hasn’t been said already by an endless stream of know-nothing TV pundits.  According to CNN, as of today, there are about 853 cases of the flu worldwide.  That means 0.000001% of the world’s population is infected.  Compare that to AIDS, which 0.48% of the world has.  I wonder which disease should be getting more of our attention.

In all honest, I will admit to being a little concerned about the Swine Flu.  I live in Toronto, which bore the brunt of the SARS outbreak five years ago, and I also have Baby Man, who is only 15 months old.  Goodness knows I would do anything to keep him healthy.  And then there is my aunt and uncle, who are on vacation in Mexico.  (Actually, they should be on their way home today, assuming they can find an airline flying out of Mexico.)  But even with all those factors, I’m still not overly concerned.  We do our best every day to stay healthy, and short of isolating ourselves in a sealed bubble, there isn’t much more to do.

I know that this outbreak has the potential to be serious, but none of the previous Swine Flu outbreaks lead to a large number of deaths.  I can’t help but feel that a lot of the panic this time around can be laid at the foot of the 24 hours news channels that need to find enough content to fill all of their on-air hours.  Kinda like the Global Economic Crisis reporting of the past six months… which has seemed to slip off the radar a little bit.

Oh, and one last thing, I’m super tired of all the emails floating around saying that eating pork is what caused the Swine Flu.  Seriously, someone believes that?  And even if it was true, you’ve have to pry the bacon from my cold, dead hand.

May 2009 Goals

It is May already, and time to review my April goals and set some goals for May.

First, for crafting I said that in April I wanted to:

  1. Crochet an Easter basket for the Baby Man
  2. Finish Baby Man’s jacket
  3. Work on Camelot Miniature on Wednesdays
  4. Get started on Baby Man’s Christmas stocking
  5. Finish the second Show-Off Strand Socks sock

Amazingly, I did everything on the list!  I actually but the last sets of ties on the baby’s jacket today, but they were something beyond the original pattern that I added because I wanted the jacket to stay closed a little better.  And, yeah, I didn’t get far on the stocking, but it is started.  Yay me!

My other goals were:

  1. Write at least three new articles for The Lotus Pond
  2. Organize my knitting patterns
  3. Organize my knitting stash

I didn’t do so well here.  I got two articles written, mainly because I have lost the notes for the third article.  (Honestly, where the heck are those notes?!?)  I did get my knitting patterns sorted, and a knitting notebook started.  However, I didn’t get my yarn sorted out.  It is all in Ravelry, but it is stored all higgledy-piggledy in the closet.

So, my May goals are:

  1. Get at least 1/3 the way through my Lily of the Valley Stole (which I am very nervous about starting)
  2. Finish one more class project from the CreativFestival (Delightful Dragon maybe)
  3. Organize my free cross stitch charts
  4. Find my missing notes and write up that article, and write at least two others
  5. Start my new challenge (more on that in a couple of days)
  6. Try baby sign language with Baby Man again

I think I’ve set some reasonable goals again.  It makes me feel good to be able to set at the end of the month that I’ve accomplished something, even though most days it feels like I am just spinning my wheels.  If I can just avoid getting that world-ending flu (kidding!), I think this will be another good month.
