Moon Shadows Magazine

I picked up my first issue of Moon Shadows (issue #33), and I have to admit that I was very disappointed. Rather then being a professional and polished magazine like other Pagan publications (PanGaia and SageWoman, for example), it seems rather amateurish and poorly written. I really am loath to say this, since it is clear that the magazine is put together with a lot of love, but it is hardly of the quality of other magazines.

Moon Shadows does offer many wonderful fairy pictures scattered throughout the magazine, most fairly well reproduced. The type setting and arrangement of the magazine needs some work, but it is organized and easy to read. It is also in desperate need of a tough copy editor.

None of the articles or columns were particularly inspiring, although the column from a Wiccan solider in Iraqi was interesting. I was most disappointed by the herbs column, since it seemed to be little more than a paraphrasing of material from Cunningham’s encyclopedia–no real insight was offered.

Moon Shadows may be worth a look if you are interested in faeries and the like, but there are many other more serious and scholarly magazines out there.

Apparenlty the magazine has had some trouble too: Good Works on Earth about Moon Shadows Magazine.

Once More…

So, I’m making yet another attempt at the whole lose weight thing. Now that summer (and the hot weather) is here, I know that my slowly increasing size is making me very uncomfortable. And, besides, isn’t being over weight a type of harm? I.e. a harm the Rede says that we should not do.

My inspiration this time is a little more then just what I see in the mirror. I’ve found a wonderful, free site called SparkPeople that essential does what eDiets and other pay sites do–provide meal plans, exercise suggestions, and lots of support. There is even a pagan oriented message board or two, full of inspiring women who are making wonderful changes.

More inspiration came by way of Jeremy Zawodny, who details his 2005 diet changes on his blog: Deit Tips or How to Lose Weight with a Spreadsheet and a Web Site. Again, good advice and it is all free.

I really do want to stick with it this time, and make healthy lifestyle changes.

I’m a Wanderer

I feel a little silly admitting this, but one of my New Year’s Resolutions, year after year, is to spend more nights at home in my own bed. Yet, life seems to conspire against me, and I seem to travel more and more every year. Last year it was a trip to Mexico to get married, this year it has been business trips up north. Who knows what next year will bring.

In reality, I don’t like to travel. I am afraid of airplanes, and I don’t really care for hotel rooms. I like being at home in my comfy apartment, where everything is mine and where I can relax. But if I only stayed here in Toronto, I’d never get to see anything new, or meet new people.

Interested in where I have been in the last twelve months? Keep reading.

Terrorists in TO

You might have heard something about a big arrest here in Toronto on Friday night. The gist of it is that 17 people with suspected links to terrorists (although they were not part of al-Qaida) were arrested overnight here in the GTA. Apparently, they had recently bought 3 tonnes (3.3 tons for you Yanks) of ammonium nitrate, intending to use it to make bombs. It is likely they were going to bomb the CSIS office (which is the equivalent of the Canadian FBI, sorta) and the provincial parliament building (which may not have been a big loss, partly because the politicians are on holiday right now, I believe).

Interesting, some of the people arrested were Canadian citizens and all were Canadian residents. They also ranged in age and social class. Also, CSIS, the RCMP, and police in the GTA have known about this group for a number of months. I suppose last night was the right time to strike.

I’m not really scared by any of this. I live in Canada’s biggest city, so I am well aware that if terrorist were to strike, this is a very tempting target. Whenever I take the subway or go downtown I worry a little. It is sad that I have to think that way, but thankfully nothing has happened here yet. But I do like to make sure that I always tell quanta I love him when he leaves for work, since you never know what might happen.

Iran-Canada Affair

The other day, I wrote about The National Post article claiming that Iran was going to implement a badge system for non-Muslims. Well, it looks like this story really was false, and that it has gotten Canada in a bit of hot water: Iran summons Cdn. envoy after erroneous story. Of course, it doesn’t help that our inept and media-unfriendly PM made a comment to the effect that this dress code was reminiscence for Nazi Germany. *sigh*

I wish I could understand why The National Post decided to run this story, on the front page no less, without throughly checking sources. Did they think people would take them at their word and not check sources themselves? Did they think that there would be no reaction from Iran? I suppose, if the story had turned out to be true, they could have had a great lead on their hands. But, with something so potentially inflammatory, they should have taken the time to make sure that they were publishing the correct information.

Blogging 360

If you take a look over to the left, you will see that I’ve added my Xbox 360 gamer tag and a link to my Xbox’s very own blog. Amazing, eh? I do share my gamer tag with quanta, since he seems to be too lazy to make his own and switch all the time, or maybe he is being nice and helping me to get a larger gamer score. Either way, you might see some games listed that really aren’t to my taste, namely Fight Night Round 3 and Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter.

Right now I am having a great time playing Kameo. It is a very pretty adventure/role-playing game that really is a whole lot of fun.

As for the Xbox 360 itself, it is a very nice system, although the DVD drive is exceptionally loud. The Xbox dashboard is nicely integrated, as is the Xbox Live Marketplace. My biggest complaint, other than the loud drive, is the fact that when browsing the marketplace, the Xbox continually pauses while it loads items. One would think that the system would be capable of containing a small list of items in memory.

I don’t think I would have the system, though, if I hadn’t received it for free. I’m not overly keen on Microsoft, and I don’t think that the 360 will stack up well against the PlayStation 3. Gosh, I sound like a fangirl, don’t I?

Iran and the Badge – True or False?

Yesterday morning I noticed a picture of Jews from World War II wearing identification badges on the front page of the National Post newspaper. This, of course, caught my attention, so I stopped to read the leading story–Iran had past a law requiring all non-Muslims to wear an indemnifying badge. I was shocked. Why hadn’t I heard about this on the news this morning? Had the National Post managed to get a massive scoop?

Today I decided to look for a story about this online. I couldn’t remember which newspaper I had seen the story in yesterday, so I decided to try both CBC Newsworld and CNN. Strangely, neither of them had any stories about a dress code in Iran for non-Muslims. Hmmmm… what’s going on here? Sure, the National Post is a conservative newspaper (for Canada anyway), but they would check their facts before printing such an inflammatory story. Right?

Well, it turns out that their story was at the very least exaggerated, and at the very most outright false. I found this story on their site today: Iranian embassy denies dress code.

So what was the purpose of this story? Why did the National Post run it without checking to see if such a law really was in place? The fact that both stories ran together with a picture of a Jewish badge from WW2 says to me that they are trying to elicit feelings of anger. I still don’t understand their motivation, though.
