Buddha

I’m deep in the midst of doing a proper, through cleaning of my craft closet. I’m going very slowly, taking time to look through everything and decide if I’m keeping and where it needs to be stored. One good result from this is that I’ve rediscovered a lot of great WIPs and new projects I want to work on; one bad result is that I have come to the realization that my stash really is much too large. :/

But, what better way to whittle down one’s stash than to work on projects and complete them! One of the first things I fished out my messy stash as a little cross stitch kit I received a few months back.

The Buddha

The Buddha

I don’t know much about the kit. It is all in Chinese and included the chart, some adia, and the floss presorted on a card. I switched out the adia for a scrap of white evenweave, and stitched it with the included floss (which was very, very nice to work with and super soft). I think the finished piece is just lovely, and much prettier than the chart. Since there was no cover photo, it was a nice surprise to see it come together.

He is very small, about 60 x 60 stitches, and he worked up in the matter of a couple of days. It helps that there isn’t a lot of back stitching! The Chinese character on the right means Buddha, and I did debate leaving it off, but ultimately decided it looked nice.

I’m not sure what I’m going to do with him. Most likely he will just end up in my box full of finished but not finished finished projects. Oh well, at least it is one more kit out of the WIP pile.

Patriotic Finish

Up here in the Great White North we celebrate Canada Day on July 1st. This year our country turned 149 years old. Sure, we are just a toddler amongst countries, but we are still very proud. And, with Canada’s 150th birthday just around the corner, I figured it is a great time to stitch up a whole bunch of Canada-themed designs.

This is Reflections of Canada from Ink Circles. I’ve stitched it over 1 on 32 count white fabric using DMC 115. I did half stitches using two strands of floss, and put in a few whole stitches in places where the half stitches left too much white space.

I love all the little motifs in this design! There is Mountie faces, hockey sticks, the Parliament buildings, beavers, maple leaves, and so much more. It was lots of fun to stitch. And it worked up so quickly! Of course, doing half stitches helped speed it along. 😉

The other designs I plan to stitch over the next twelve months include Victoria Sampler’s O Canada Sampler (which I have already started), Joan Elliot’s Canadian Beauty, and Maple Leaf Flag from Northern Expressions. I probably won’t get them all finished, but it will be fun none the less!

WIP Wednesday – Witchy Start

Oh, goodness. July has been hot so far. I am not a big fan of summer, so I’ve been hiding inside as much as possible, trying to work through my summer to-do list while the little man is off enjoying summer camp. I’ve also managed to get in quite a bit of stitching time, and even finished a whole project! (I’ll share it tomorrow, but you can get a sneak peek on my Instagram account.)

Since I am counting the days until the cool fall weather returns, I’ve decided to start a Halloween-y design.

I’m stitching Electra, one of Mirabilia’s lovely witch designs. I’m stitching it as per the chart (more or less), on some brown-ish fabric I found in my stash. It could very well be Mushroom Lugana, but I’m not sure. (I need to put “sort and label fabrics” on that summer to-do list.)

Hopefully she will be done and framed in time for Halloween.

More tomorrow, stitchy friends!

Smalls SAL – June 2016 Check-In

Welcome to the June Smalls Stitch Along check-in. Congratulations! You’ve made it halfway through the year! Yay!

SmallsSAL2016

Thank you, again, very much for taking part in the Smalls SAL. I feel so inspired and encouraged by all of you, and I really love seeing all of your wonderful finishes. I can’t wait to see what the next six months bring.

This month brings to the end my series of Teresa Wentzler’s Byzantium Ornaments (also known as Christmas Ornaments or Stain Glass Ornaments). This last one is labelled #6 in the kit.

I’m not sure which one is my favourite overall, but I do know that I like this one a whole lot. If I was ambitious, I would stitch it again and make a very luscious biscornu out of it.

I’m not 100% sure what I’m going to do over the next six months. My original plan was to work on different sections of Joan Elliott’s 12 Days of Christmas, but now I’m rethinking that. Hopefully I will make up my mind soon!

So, what did you stitch this month? Please use the little form below to check in with your finished small. Remember, please use the permalink for your post, not the link to the homepage of your blog. And, please use a picture of your finish with your link.

The link list will remain open for new entries until about midnight Easter time on July 7th, so you still have piles of time to stitch something up and check in. Don’t forget: you get one entry into the end of the year draw for each month that you check in with a completed finish.

Next Month – The check-in for July will take place on Thursday, July 28th.

Thanks again for stitching along with me!

WIP Wednesday – More Stocking

It seems like it has been ages since I shared my progress on All Hearts Come Home Stocking. I haven’t forgotten about it, although I will admit that I’ve been spending far too much time on other projects.

This upper portion of the stocking is the most heavily stitched section, so while it may look like progress is pretty slow, I am actually moving ahead pretty well. Will I have it done in time for Christmas this year? Well, I have until Christmas Eve, right? 😉

I’ll have another Christmasy finish to share tomorrow for the Smalls SAL check-in. I can’t wait to see you then!

Sugar Skull

Hello, Stitchy Friends! I’m so sorry that I have been so quiet lately. I’ve been focusing on a few other things, and sadly blogging has had to fall to the side. But, summer is around the corner, and with my little guy in all day summer camp for most of his vacation, I’m hoping I’ll have a lot more time for stitching and my blog. I feel so lonely when I don’t interact with all of you!

So, to celebrate the penultimate day of school I’m sharing my latest finish with you: Morado Sugar Skull from Mill Hill.

I love skulls. In fact, I’m wearing this shirt today. (Sadly, I am the weird parent that the other parents don’t really talk to…) And, so, I knew I had to stitch this one when I saw Mill Hill’s new series. I think she turned out very nicely. I especially like how two sizes of beads are used to give more dimension to the teeth.

SmallsSAL2016

Smalls SAL – Guess what! It is almost Smalls SAL check-in day. Are you ready? The check-in post will go live early in the morning (Eastern time) on Thursday, June 30th, and I can’t wait to see what you all have stitched.

Stitchable Santa (Review and Finish)

I love the idea of wooden stitchable pieces. In fact, this is the third wooden piece I’ve done. (Check out my butterfly here and my keychain here.) I haven’t been very happy with my experience with any of these project, but sadly this most recent kit was the worst of the bunch.

Bucilla Stitchable Shapes - Santa

Bucilla Stitchable Shapes – Santa

The wooden piece itself is nice. It is surprisingly thick, and the holes are all drilled completely through. Everything is finished nicely, so there are no rough areas for your floss to get caught on. The instructions, though, are barely adequate. It is difficult to decipher which holes you need to be using for the stitches zigzagging across the hat and the moustache. And, weirdly, the translation into French and Spanish is patchy. (E.g. Step 3 is repeated in English for all three languages.)

Ooops, no more white but all kinds of other colours are left.

Ooops, no more white but all kinds of other colours are left.

Where the kit really falls down is in the supplied cotton floss. Not only is the floss poor quality (DMC it is not), there is both too much and not enough. It seems like the same bundle of floss is thrown in all the kits in this series, so you are given lots of colours that you don’t need. However, there was nowhere near enough white to finish off this piece. (See the picture above. That is all the floss I had left, and all the empty areas needed to be stitched white.) Thankfully, I was able to more or less match the white included in the kit with some old J&P Coats floss, and then I finished off the swirls in the beard using DMC E5200 Light Effects. (I used Light Effects because I was feeling masochistic that day.)

I’m happy with the finished product, but I will not buy another one of these kits. For the price, I most certainly expect to have all the materials I need to finish the project as it is charted. :/

(This is an edited and expanded version of my review for this item on Amazon.ca.)
