Crush Crush

It seems a little bit like the House of Crushed Dreams around here lately. quanta was laid off a little over two and a half weeks ago. He got a fabulous severance package, so we are just fine money-wise. His job search isn’t going really well though, or maybe it would be better to say that things aren’t proceeding as quickly as he would like. Honestly, he is bored out of his mind.

As for me, I think I am going to gracefully withdraw from NaNoWriMo. I am not the least bit inspired. I started writing the story that I had laid out a plot for and hit about 2,000 words before I became disenchanted with it. So, I switched plots and made it to 7,000 words. Now I have run that plot into the ground. I feel very disappointed, and rather discouraged. But, I will participate again next year, taking more time creating my characters and plot outline before NaNoWriMo begins. Also, I think my talent is moving more towards non-fiction writing, which I am more then happy with.

I Remember

Today is Remembrance Day, a day set aside for Canadians to remember all the men and women who served in all the military actions Canada has been involved in since World War I. Sadly, I think the importance of this day is being lost now that so many of our veterans are passing away. I know that I will always do my best to remember those brave people.

My maternal grandfather went overseas for World War II. He wasn’t involved directly in the fighting, but his role was still important. He was a line man, and his job was to string power cables. I think he was happy to go away to war, or as happy as a man could be based on the situation. I do know that when he found out he was leaving, he asked my grandmother to marry him.

My paternal great-grandfather served in World War I. My father recently discovered Attestation Paper. We really don’t know to much about what he did. He was a taylor, and we believe he helped outfit his unit. We also know he lied about his age, so that he would be eligible to enlist. How many 52 year old men would now claim to be 42 just so they could go to war?

Thank you grandfathers, and thank you veterans, for your sacrifices.

More Serenity!

My lovely desktop computer, the aptly named Serenity, is back up and running. I’m not sure what I did, other then call it a couple of names, wiggle a couple of cords, and move the RAM chip into another slot. Based on this “solution” and previous problems with the IDE channels, we are pretty sure that there is some sort of problem with the motherboard. quanta contacted the nice people at Asus on Friday (before I got Serenity running again), but we haven’t heard back from them.

It is odd how this whole experience affected me. I really felt lost, adrift without my oar sort of thing. It’s not like I was without a computer. I still had my notebook, Thaleia, and quanta’s computer, Elysium. Heck, I went a whole 24 hours in the summer without electricity, and I was fine. I think the problem was that I wasn’t able to have something I wanted. I don’t seem to deal well with being denied.

Well, I suppose I should tidy up my computer cables and put that screw back in that was holding my hard drive in place. I’m so worried about turning the computer off again, or loading up the dreaded Sims (which I was attempting to play when Serenity died). No point in babying the old girl though. Our relationship isn’t like that. She abuses me and I abuse her. 🙂

Friday Five

Another Friday Five!

1. What food do you like that most people hate?
I like a lot of real Chinese food, which most people won’t even try. There was some I was afraid to try too, but it actually pretty much all tastes really good.

2. What food do you hate that most people love?
I don’t like pickles. And they generally don’t like me.

3. What famous person, whom many people may find attractive, is most unappealing to you?
I don’t find Tom Cruise attractive at all. I’m not sure why people go crazy over him.

4. What famous person, whom many people may find unappealing, do you find
attractive?

I can’t really think of one. I’m not really all that interested in famous people, you know?

5. What popular trend baffles you?
Why does everything have to be hip-hop or rap? It’s really doesn’t make a lot of sense, and it makes a lot of people and products look really silly.

Good and Bad

Today has been a good day and a bad day. I was finally able to get a good night sleep last night, although quanta’s cell phone did wake me up at 6 am with it’s low battery warning. Instead of lying in bed and staring at the ceiling, I got up to work on my NaNoWriMo novel. I really had no idea what to write, since I pretty much had writer’s block. Not nice at all. Well, I decided to change the whole focus of my novel, and I managed to get quite a bit written today. I’m much happier with this new direction too.

On the bad news front, it looks like my desktop computer has decided it doesn’t like me right now. It froze while loading a game, and now it won’t even boot. A few quick attempts at troubleshooting haven’t resolved the problems. quanta has offered a few other suggestions, which I will try tomorrow when I am a little less annoyed.
