Disappeared

Over the past week or so I’ve been random blog-hopping through the blog rings I belong to. (See further down the sidebar for all that fun stuff.) I’ve come across quite a few blogs that haven’t had new entries in a few months, or a year, or a couple of years. This always makes me wonder what happened to the person. Did they give up blogging? Did they start a new blog somewhere else? Did something worse happen?

Two days ago I came across a blog where the last entry was sometime in November 2003. It was a typical entry, where the woman was complaining about her job, life in general, etc. Strangely there were approximately 40 comments for this mundane entry. Being curious, I started to read the comments to see what the heck people were posting about. My first thought, naturally, was probably a flame war that started somewhere else and spread to her blog. I’ve seen it happen before. But no, the woman had died about a week after the entry was posted. Friends were leaving messages about her funeral and about how much they missed her.

I read a few of the older entries in her blog, but nothing seem to point to the fact that she was ill. It seemed like one day she just died. I was shocked and upset. I mean, it isn’t right for someone young, healthy and alive to just die. And it is more then a little strange to come across this piece of her life, so unfinished, like she will start posting again any day.

This is yet another reason to always tell your loved ones what them mean to you.

Advice

A few days ago I came across a blog entry, somewhere on my general rounds of the blogosphere, where the author was asking for marriage advice to pass on at an upcoming wedding shower. I didn’t comment, because at the time I didn’t really have anything to add. But, I’ve been thinking about it and I believe I do have some advice to pass on. Sure, quanta and I aren’t married, but we have been living together for three years now, so I feel that I do know a little something.

My biggest piece of advice is to say “I love you” every night before you go to sleep. It sounds simple, and maybe even a little sappy, but I think it is something wise to do. It plays into that old “Never go to bed angry” advice everyone is given. It is hard to stay angry when you tell you SO you truly love them. Also, by doing this every night, you are consistently letting the other person know how you feel; you are connecting if even for a few minutes. And, if you are of a morbid bent, you never know what is going to happen while you sleep, so don’t let a chance to say “I love you” pass by.

I try to tell quanta I love him every night before bed, and every morning when he leaves for work.

Layers of Me

I’ve been meaning to do this meme for ages, but I had completely forgot about it. Lani put her’s up today, so I snagged it from there.

Another Day in the Life of Me

It is only 9:30 and already it has been an exciting morning. The allergic reaction in my eye has cleared up (thanks to some eye drops I should have been using all along), and I have my contacts back in. I’ve spent the past two days wearing glasses with an old prescription, which have been giving me a low grade headache. It is wonderful to be able to see clearly again!

quanta was late for work this morning because I insisted he find and kill a GIANT!!! millipede that ran in the door just as he was leaving. Not very “Harm None”, I know, but I am terrified of bugs. They are almost enough to bring me to tears, and I just can’t help it. quanta insisted on describing the noise it made when he killed it (with one of my shoes!), which really upset me. Ick!

I’ve also already applied for three jobs this morning. With any luck I will hear back from one of them shortly. I am very eager to get back to work. (And if anyone one who received one of my resumes is reading this: Please hire me! I will do an excellent job.)

The plan for the rest of the day:

  • Another update to The Lotus Pond
  • More reading and research for The Book
  • Tidy out my desk drawer (which is necessary to do the above)
  • Start making a Christmas list (long story, but more or less I can never think of what to suggest to my Mom to get me for Christmas, so I am starting a list to add small things to when I think of them. Better then says “Oh… a book and ummm… bubble bath.)
  • Wash and iron some cross stitch pieces
  • Hand washing (Argh! The most dreaded of washing!)
  • Walk to the park

I intend to get the most out of today, unlike yesterday. 🙂

Witches Weekly – Path, Work Place and Raising Children

It is time for another Witches Weekly!

Path, Workplace, and Raising Children

What path of Paganism do you follow? (If you take pieces from several traditions, list all of them and why you follow those as well)
I am an eclectic Wiccan. My practice is somewhat influenced by the Ancient Greek and Egyptian pantheons and practices.

Are you/would you be open about your spirituality in the workplace/school?
Yes and no. My family and friends know about my religion and beliefs, but I don’t advertise my religion. As I mentioned here, I feel that religion is personal, and not something to be shared either to fit in or to look cool. In most cases, religion has no place in the work place, so why share?

If you were in a marriage of separate faiths, how would you raise your children?
quanta is Catholic, so this is something we have been discussing. He wants to send our children (when we have them, that is) to Catholic school because he feels the academic standards are higher. I totally disagree, and I also am very uncomfortable at the thought of our children getting a religious education at school. What I would like to happen is to send the children to public school and/or home school, and to try to teach them about a variety of religions without forcing them into one or the other.

D-Day 60th Anniversary

Today is the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. 14,000 Canadian soldiers landed on Juno beach sixty years ago today. Another 450 soldiers parachuted behind enemies lines, supported by the Canadian Air Force up above it all. We may not have been the biggest force, as there were many more Americans and British present, but the Canadian forces gave their all. Eventually, forces from other countries, like Australia, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and Poland, joined the fighting.

So what does D-Day mean? D stands for nothing more then day. In fact, in French it is referred to as Jour-J (jour being the word for day). Since the exact time of the operation wasn’t known for most of the planning, it was easier to refer to it as D-Day, rather then by a date.

If you are interested, CBC has a site set up about the Canadian involvement in D-Day: CBC News: D-Day Indepth Backgrounder.

As for the other big event of the day, Ronald Reagan’s death, I must say I am a little sad. He is the first American President I remember. I can’t say I always agreed with the things he did, nor do I agree with all the things being said about him. (The way CNN talks about him, you would think he personally took down the Berlin Wall brick by brick. I guess those Germans had nothing to do with it.) For a Canadian view on Reagan’s presidency and legacy, here is another CBC article: America’s movie star president.
